Another idea I think could be worth pursuing is the Beat Blair one, which has received some good feedback to this point. One drawback of this idea is that people may not be bothered to exercise themselves and hit the rug. It might also be hazardous to people with bad backs. However the novelty value of the thing would be quite funny.
Maybe I could place a number of objects with which to hit the rug apart from the traditional beater (cricket bat, tennis racquet, golf club, long stick etc.) or maybe I could go all out for the early 20th century effect and create a whole atmosphere of a pre-war working class household.
A lot of this idea would rest on the execution of the projections. Would these be videos or animations? Rough cut Photoshops? As has been commented, the post production may be a critical factor in its success. I think the idea demonstrated in the rough Flash mockup is working quite well so it may only be a case of cleaning these up and improving on them.
I would also have to be certain about positioning of the sensors - would I actually place one on the back of the rug or on a solid surface behind it which the rug would hit, triggering the response within the Flash file, as a substitute for clicking buttons with the mouse in the Flash mockup.
The Beat Blair thing is nothing like this. I would in no way condone violence.
